5 Places in France You Should Visit this Winter

Spring in France inspires romance, summer inspires poetry, fall inspires tranquility, but what about winter in France? If you have never been to France in winters, then you are missing out on a whole lot of things, one of which is having the country to yourself!

I was born in the South of France, in Montpellier, where winters are dry, sunny and not really cold. I then spent 5 years in Paris where the cold months are -really- cold and usually snowy. But I can tell you, with the tourist season over, France belongs to French again, and it’s the best time to meet and live like locals. Here is a non-exhaustive list of cities to visit this winter!

1. Paris, the obvious choice

Paris is magical in any season, well, it’s Paris! But in winter, the City of Lights is usually covered in snow, streets are quiet and the Eiffel Tower and other museums’ waiting lines are surely smaller. If you’re visiting around Christmas, I strongly advise to drop in at Galeries Lafayette for a glimpse of their fabulous decorations and tree with amazing ornaments.

2. Meribel, the snowy choice

Also known as one of the most gorgeous ski resort in the world. People usually come for the adrenaline and stay for the view and the cute mountain villages. If you’re interested in visiting France for the Ski, here are our 3 best resorts across the country.

3. Camargue, the natural choice

In summer, this region is packed with locals and tourists on camping trips. It’s kind of the Riviera for nature lovers! But in the winter season, Camargue tells a different story! On the migratory route, it is a haven for bird lovers since several species of birds spend the cold months there. My personal favorites are the pink flamingos with their 50 shades of pink. If you’re planning to visit this region, check out the post I wrote about my road trip in the South of France, and have fun!

4. Menton, the citrusy choice

Every February, the little town of Menton on the French Riviera runs one of France’s most popular events: the Lemon Festival or Fête du citron. For 2 weeks, statues, floats, and figurines of all sizes are set up in the center on the town, and all of them are made of lemon and oranges. Marking the arrival of spring, it’s a great opportunity to witness the fruity-colored fest.

5. Bordeaux, the wine lover choice

Ok, Bordeaux can be visited all around the year, especially if you’re a wine lover! But winter calls for fewer tourists and more wine tasting! The town is filled with nice bars and cafés where you can enjoy local wines from Medoc ans Daint Emilion (and delicious, yet hearty food!). Opened in 2016, you should also visit the world biggest museum dedicated to wine: the Cité du Vin.

Bon Voyage!
