The perfect time to go to Nîmes is now! In the cooler months from September to May, the sun stays out and the winds cool you down. There is almost no rain during these months, so your 24 hours of exploring won’t be interrupted.
Nîmes was the main chariot route from Italy to Spain starting in 118 B.C. Thus, this French town is rich with Roman influence beautifully blended with French culture.
9am: Start your day nice and early with some great french breakfast, La Petite Fadette is the perfect place! On the outdoor patio, you can enjoy a simple coffee and croissant or a substantial and scrumptious breakfast. You’ll be delighted with the friendly staff and reasonable prices.
11am: Short tour with some awesome views. Less than a half mile from La petite fadette is the Jardins de la Fontaine (Fountain’s gardens). These beautiful gardens were constructed in the 18th century and are adorned with vases and statues. It is also home to Tour Magne and Temple Diana.
Just over a quarter mile away is Maison Carrée: the only fully preserved classical roman temple in the world. Standing at five and half< stories tall, it leaves visitors astonished.
2pm: You’re Probably hungry from all that walking
A La Tchatche is literally around the corner from the Arènes producing a fabulous view. They provide their guests with beautiful platters of the region’s fresh meats and delicious cheeses. You can sit and relax as you sip wine or beer with friends.
3.30pm: Visit the inside. The next stop is the Arènes! Seating 21 thousand, this is not the largest roman amphitheater, but it is the best-preserved. This amphitheater was built in 100 ad and still serves the same purpose today hosting with festivals and concerts year-round.
7pm: Rested and rejuvenated? Le ménestrel is tucked away on a quaint little street near the Arena. It has a certificate of excellence and maintains 5 stars. Here, you can feast on baked mussels or octopus gnocchi complemented by a glass of white wine. You will not be disappointed by this authentic restaurant.
10 p.m Time to party
If you want a choice of over 250 wines, stop by Wine Bar Le Cheval Blanc. This bar has beautiful views and even a cigar room! If you want to check out a locals’ bar, try O’Flaherty’s. With an extensive list of whiskeys and beers, there’s plenty to choose from. If you want to dance until the wee hours of the night, scope out Le Victor Hugo. They also feature a quieter lounge and an outside patio.
