Homemade Baguette Recipe

The last time I introduced a post about the Baguette it was for the Apéritif (French Happy Hour with wine and more food!). But the Baguette is so versatile. From the breakfast to the dinner it makes everything taste better! In the morning,  I love to spread some butter and natural jam on my tartine (like a lot of French people). For lunch or dinner, the French bread is perfect with a salad or any meat dishes “en sauce” such as boeuf bourguignon. And for a quick, yet yummy snack, top your Baguette with some butter and dark chocolate.

Now you understand what French people traveling abroad are missing the most… Their bread!

Anyway, making a homemade Baguette is not as hard and time-consuming as you can expect. It’s pretty fun for the kids too! They absolutely looove having their tiny cute hands in the dough. Here’s my no-brainer recipe to enjoy a fresh made Baguette:

Preparation Time: 3h30

Cook Time: 50 min.

Ingredients for  Baguette

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup tap water, heated to 115°

2 tsp instant yeast

1 tsp salt

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl whisk together water and yeast. Add flour and stir until blended; dough will be shaggy and sticky. Add salt and knead until elastic and smooth. Covered bowl with damp cotton towel and place bowl in a cold oven for 3 hours or until dough doubled in size.
  2. Transfer dough to a lightly floured work surface and fold it over on itself several times to remove air. In the large bowl, coat a dry cotton towel with flour and put dough seam side down on towel. Return to cold oven for about an hour.
  3. Remove dough from oven and heat oven to 450°. On a lightly floured work surface shape dough into a 14” rope. Flour a sheet of perforated parchment paper on a rimless baking sheet and place rope on paper. Using a paring knife, slash the top of the baguette.
  4. Bake the baguette until darkly browned and crisp, about 50 minutes. Cool before serving.
