3 French Wedding Traditions you didn’t know existed

Posted by Lifestyle Blogger on

Bertrand -the other Bon Appétit Box founder- and I got married in the South of France, in a small but very cute village called Caissargues. Of course we had the white dress and the suit, the ring and much more, but we also followed some popular French wedding traditions. So if you’d like to incorporate some of these throughout your big day, I’m happy to share some of the most famous ones in this article!

1- The wedding Cake

Obviously it’s supposed to be at the end of the day, but you know me, I love food and I couldn’t resist to start with the famous “Pièce Montée” (or Croquembouche). This famous French cake, made up of small crème-filled pastry puffs stacked high into the shape of a pyramid and covered in a caramel glaze, is often served at parties celebrating weddings and baptisms.

2- Dragées

Another old French wedding tradition is to give Dragées (ie. French Jordan almonds) to all of the guests. This old specialty is sugar or chocolate coated almonds, no need to say that I always go for the chocolaty one! So if you attend a wedding (or baptism) in France, you can be sure to receive a small package with these candies!

3- Sabrage

The “Sabrage” is a tradition that dates back to Napoléon’s soldats to celebrate victories. Nowadays it’s a common practice at wedding celebrations to behead a bottle of champagne. The sabres practice and the flowed champagne can make any occasion really special. Be careful to not have a shaky hand!

Little Extra: The gift

It’s really traditional and common for the bride and the groom to make gifts for every guest. So if you don’t have the chance to get married in France, don’t worry! You can still incorporate these French customs in the US and give the gift of Bon Appétit Box – to have the most amazing Frenchie wedding ever! Just released, The Petite Apéritif Box was designed as the perfect bridesmaid gift meant to delight all your foodie guests.

Voilà!
