The Most Beautiful Places in France: Part I

This month we’re excited to start a new series and are discovering the most beautiful places in the North of France!

A few years ago, my husband (also co-founder!) and I decided to go on a road trip in the North of France. We decided to skip Paris (duh I know!), but do not worry, there are true gems in this beautiful part of the country too. Today, I’m happy to share with you some of my best memories on the road. From the (once upon a time) king’s city of Versailles to the charming Normandy, let’s get a sense of freedom and adventure.

Palace de Versailles - Bon Appétit Box

Palace of Versailles

Just an hour away from Paris, stands the Palace of Versailles. Home to Marie-Antoinette and the Sun King, Louis XIV centuries ago. Symbol of luxury, this palace is one of the more impressive combined displays of art, architecture, interior design, and landscaping in the world. Plan to spend 3 hours if you want to visit the castle itself. But also the gorgeous gardens (called Jardin a la Francaise) and the Trianon where Queen Marie-Antoinette used to spend some intimate time.

Gardens of Giverny - Bon Appétit Box

Giverny

Located in a small village on the border of Normandy, Giverny is mostly famous for being Claude Monet’s cherished heaven. The pastel pink house is pretty. But what really worth visiting are the lush and colorful gardens! Almost like an impressionist painting, this out-of-time oasis will surely blow your mind!

Cliffs of Eretat - Bon Appétit Box

Cliffs of Étretat

This scenery inspired Claude Monet, and it will surely inspire any visitors! With its chalk huge cliffs’ 80-mile stretch, you can spot natural sculptures facing the endless horizon of the Atlantic Ocean. Fish on the beach, climb the 230 ft pointed formation, or just hike along the cliffs and enjoy the sea sprays. There is something to do for everyone in the Etretat region.

Mont Sant Michel - Bon Appétit Box

Mont Saint-Michel

A magical island topped by a gravity-defying medieval monastery, the Mont-Saint-Michel counts among France’s most stunning sights. Rising from vast sandbanks and powerful tides, the rocky island is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the breathtaking bay, take pictures of the holy mount, and don’t forget to have a Galette (a savory Crepe), Normandy’s specialty!

Pink Granite Coast - Bon Appétit Box

Pink Granite Coast

The Pink Granite Coast, so-called because of the color of its rocks, is one of the most beautiful stretches of Brittany’s coastline. The area is renowned for its unusual rock formations and eccentric pink granite formations. The best of which can be found on the coastal path between Perros-Guirec and the port of Ploumanac’h. The geology ranges from massive rose gold boulders to eroded pink sand, all contrasted beautifully against the gray foam of the sea. To me, the ultimate romantic thing would be drinking pink champagne at sunset. While admiring the colors changing from the rocks to the sky.

I hope you enjoyed the ride! Have you ever taken a road-trip to France? Is it something on your bucket list?

Stay tuned for our Part II about the most beautiful in the South of France!

Bon Voyage!

Zoé Capdevila - Bon Appétit BoxZoé Capdevila

She is the co-founder of Bon Appétit Box. She was born & raised in Montpellier in the South of France and then spent 5 years exploring the culinary offerings of Paris. In her free time, she loves to walk on the beach watching the sea scenery in every season. When she comes back to France, her favorite thing is to sit outside with friends and enjoy some cheese (she’s a fan of Roquefort!) with a glass of red wine of course!
