24 hours in Montpellier

After visiting the beautiful cities of Annecy and Rennes, I’m really happy to take you to the South of France, in Montpellier, my hometown!

Located on the south coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Montpellier is a stylish metropolis with elegant buildings, private mansions, stately boulevards and shady backstreets. In the past few years, the city has been a tremendous hotspot for architects and titans of fashion. Lacroix decorated the two new tram lines. Hadid designed the new archives building. Starck designed the plans for a new fitness center and many more!

10 a.m Go see the art of Darkness

Close to the city’s main square, the Place de la Comédie, the Musée Fabres has a large collection of sculptures and paintings from the 17th century. But what’s really striking is the dozens of black canvases by the French artist Pierre Soulages. Known for its endless black depth paintings, the artist actually plays with the light reflected from the black. It’s a must-see!

11.30 a.m Tour the old town

The entire town center, called L’Ecusson (French for “badge”) is a pedestrian zone, so feel free to stroll the tiny streets while shopping! Stop by the prettiest square, the Place de La Canourgue and have a wonderful and quiet lunch under the old trees.

2 p.m Surf the design wave

Ride colorful tram to the Antigone district and stop at the foot of the enormous new city hall. The blue monolithic building was designed by famous architect Jean Nouvel. Nearby, go see Le Nuage (the Cloud), a health dedicated building imagined by superstar Philippe Starck. Known as the first inflatable building in France, this poetic construction is pretty amazing. Dispersed all over the town of Montpellier, you can admire other architects’ masterpieces: the futuristic municipal archives building by Zaha Hadid, the innovative residential building of Moussavi called the Divine Foly, and many other.

7 p.m Dinner on the terrace of Villa 29

Alain Temime is the Chef of this small restaurant where the magic happens. A little outside of the agitation of the city, sat on the terrace and relax while enjoying a glass of local wine. Everything is homemade, the portions are huge and the customer care is fantastic. Try the delicious Thai tartare made from the most tender beef meat!

9 p.m Bath time

A former bathhouse from the 18th-century has been entirely renewed to welcome you. Grab one of their delicious cocktails and start dancing in this old stone building till the end of the night!

Bon voyage!
