If you’re not going to visit France soon – I can still give you a taste of France thanks to my top 5 French movies. With my roommates we have a tradition called “Sunday Movie Night”. Every Sunday at 9pm we gather and watch a movie together, with popcorn obviously! We are 6 total living in a house – one of us pick a movie and every week we take turns. I am the only French, so who better than me to show them (and you now!) great French movies. In the past 10 years, I’ve been pretty amazed with the quality of French movies, actors and actresses. Here you will find my top 5, I hope you like them as much as I do. Some are available online on Netflix if not, on DVD Netflix as well. Enjoy ;)

Amélie (Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain) – 2001 – Genre: Comedy, Romance
I know! This is the most “cliché” example of a popular French movie; However with its fun and whimsical approach to its vibrant visuals and a narrative that builds on itself with confidence and charm, it’s also a great movie for beginning and intermediate French speakers. Amelie is an innocent and naive girl in Paris. She has her own sense of justice. She decides to help those around her. Along the way she discovers love.

The Intouchables – 2011 – Genre: Biography, Comedy, Drama
Based on a true story, after an aristocrat becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, he is turned upside down when he hires a young good-humored ex-con as to be his caregiver. It is funny in a way that is authentic, sincere and by which anyone can relate to. Above all, it is revealing and comforting in its reminder of the fundamental in life : love.

Blue Is the Warmest Color (La Vie d’Adèle) – 2014 – Genre: Drama, Romance
The movie was immediately acclaimed for what it is, a chef d’oeuvre. This movie is intimately fascinating, even transporting, as it slowly displays its narrative of intellectual and artistic pursuit, sexual communion and the unforgettable impact of first love. Adele’s life is changed when she meets Emma. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself and ultimately finds herself through love and loss.

Kings of Pastry – 2009 – Genre: Documentary, Drama, Family
The movie follows Jacquy Pfeiffer, founder of The French Pastry School in Chicago, as he returns to France to compete against 15 of France’s leading pastry chefs. The filmmakers were given first time/exclusive access to this high-stakes drama of passion, sacrifice, disappointment and joy in the quest to have the former French President declare them one of the best in France.

Girlhood – (Bande de filles) 2014 – Genre: Drama
It could be described as a coming-of-age story, and it honors the genre, and its main character, with admirable sensitivity and sympathy. While the movie has a lot to say about the general condition of being a girl, in the Paris banlieues, it never loses sight of the specific girl at its heart. Marieme with few real prospects joins a gang, reinventing herself and gaining a sense of self confidence in the process. However, she soon finds that this new life does not necessarily make her any happier.

Bon film!

Anne-SophieAnne-Sophie

Anne-Sophie was born and raised in Reims, the home of Champagne. After living in Spain, she decided to move to San Francisco. Passionate about photography and travels; Recently back from Peru, she fell in love with pisco sour and ceviche. Cooking is a hobby; Cheese and cider are certainly an addiction!
